FTR: Let’s start with your band name, what made you choose it for this project?

RICHARD RAMIREZ: Black Leather Jesus comes from a story of a woman held captive for seven years by a religious man who told her that he was god and controlled her life. He beat her, raped her, tortured her. She eventually escaped. He held her bound under his bed. It was a bizarre story. I started Black Leather Jesus in 1989. The name just came to mind after reading this story.

FTR: How would you describe your sound and working process?

RICHARD RAMIREZ: Our sound is harsh noise or industrial noise. We don’t record often all together. We at times have to resort to mail collaboration. We all live far from each other. We want to try to record together more often than previous. We also don’t perform live that much either. Our schedules are tough to do so.

[Black Leather Jesus Dead Audio 2009 Houston, Tx filmed by Hierchiss]

[Black Leather Jesus - Live @ Dead Audio Fest, 07.25.06, Houston, TX]

FTR: About the instruments and technology you use to produce the sound, do you constantly update them, or are old and cheap synths and the like still good for your purposes?

RICHARD RAMIREZ: I tend to use older equipment. The other members like the latest in equipment. We don’t use synths in our work at all. I’m not too fond of them.

Photobucket

FTR: With regards to electronic/experimental artists, which band did you discover first? How did you come across them?

RICHARD RAMIREZ: My first experience with experimental music were artists like Nurse with Wound, Non, Nocturnal Emissions, Strafe Fur Rebellion, The Haters, and Chop Shop.

FTR: Who or what influences you and your sound?

RICHARD RAMIREZ: Our biggest influences are Hijokaidan, The New Blockaders, The Haters, Whitehouse, and Emil Beaulieau.

Photobucket

FTR: Regarding the myspace noise culture/what could be seen as the myspace noise race, it appears there are an awful lot of releases coming out by a large amount of “noise” artists, spamming page after page throughout myspace with their 30+ album release this year. What are your thoughts regarding this rushed approach? (Asked before the death of Myspace!)

RICHARD RAMIREZ: Well, it depends. I do lots of releases. I cannot judge my own work. There are artists that put out stuff a lot. Some are good, some not. Then again, there are artists that don’t put out too much and sometimes it still sucks.

FTR: What is your opinion in particular of Japanese “Nipponoise/Japanoise” looking at their main artists like Merzbow, Masonna, and the most recent developments of today’s so called “power-electronics/noise” scene?

RICHARD RAMIREZ: Well, I am not a big fan of power electronics. I do like some like Mauthausen Orchestra, Con-Dom, Whitehouse, Discordance, Atrax Morgue. As for Japanoise, I’ve worked with Merzbow, MSBR, Government Alpha, Incapacitants, Guilty Connector, Astro, Forced Orgasm, and others. I like some not all. I was never a big Masonna, Aube, Thirdorgan fan. There are some newer ones that I do like: Soma, Molester, Cracked Mirror.

FTR: I would like to ask you if you are interested in which kind of people listen to your sound, I mean, how do you imagine him/her to be?

RICHARD RAMIREZ
: It varies. Being openly gay, I get some gay fans that like artists like Coil, Death in June, Throbbing Gristle, etc. More gay oriented experimental musicians. I’ve been surprised by the amount of metalheads that have interest in my work. It’s hard to say what specific person listens to my work. There’s a wide range.

FTR: Women seem to be a main focus of noise humiliation – in the form of album covers, themes, and track titles, are you interested in deviated or perverted sexual behaviors? If so, what attracts you so much in sexual violence and sexist language?

Photobucket

RICHARD RAMIREZ: Well, I turned the focus onto men. I used men as the object, the subject, my interests. I use sadomasochism themes because it’s a part of me. It’s not a gimmick. I think some of my other projects (i.e. Last Rape) might be labeled as misogynist, but it’s based on Italian giallo films. That’s all.

Photobucket

FTR: Are you interested in serial killers? Do you think they are a typical product of 20th century society, and what is your opinion about in particular American “serial killer culture” ?

RICHARD RAMIREZ: I have some interests, but some thought my name, Richard Ramirez, comes from the serial killer of the same name. Richard Ramirez is my real name and is not uncommon in Texas. I’m not obsessed with serial killers like some. I love horror films. That is my obsession. Extreme horror films, not the b.s. of today.

Photobucket

FTR: If you could do a gig anywhere in the world where would it be?

RICHARD RAMIREZ: I’d love to perform in London. I’ve done shows around the U.S./Canada/Mexico, and also in Tokyo.

FTR: I’m really impressed with the sound projects coming out of the English, Italian, German scene, etc, etc. Is their any country in particular that inspire you more than others?

Photobucket

RICHARD RAMIREZ: Particular country that I like the most artists from? America. I think we have some of the best here. It’s not as pretentious as some tend to be. I do like artists from other countries too, but if I’m going to count my favorites, they’re from the U.S. I think U.S. noise artists tend to have a more raw sound than others. I don’t hear a lot of that from others outside here. It seems more polished. I don’t like polished sounds. It can be boring. Some of the best raw sounds from another country would be Smell & Quim and Fecalove. I love them!!!

FTR: Do you listen to different types of music? A secret Elvis collection perhaps?!

RICHARD RAMIREZ: Elvis? HELL NO!!! I do listen to other styles of music. I grew up listening to Skinny Puppy (hate their later work), Einsturzende Neubauten, Bauhaus, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Echo & The Bunnymen, Cocteau Twins, The Jesus & Mary Chain, a;GRUMH…, Chris & Cosey, Legendary Pink Dots, Swans, Patti Smith, Big Black, Germs, etc. etc.

Photobucket

FTR: What first, chicken or the egg?

RICHARD RAMIREZ: I guess we’ll never know. Or will we?

FTR: Haha, a mystery! Thanks for your time here Richard. Great interview!

========================================================================================================

FTR: Let’s start with your band name, what made you choose it for this project?

I liked Naked City’s album called; Torture, said the pain, Nurse will people quiet, but there are two words contain the double meaning of pain and joy.

FTR: How would you describe your sound and working process?

We passed a lot of different attempts, the present, the main effects of various sources and the use of on-site meetings more physical performances, the album would be relatively diverse effects of the collision may also be the sound of screaming people, Or is the background noise recording, sound more likely to be direct to sex.

FTR: About the instruments and technology you use to produce the sound, do you constantly update them, or are old and cheap synths and the like still good for your purposes?

We will at different times with some different equipment, you two mentioned above are applicable to Torturing Nurse

Photobucket

FTR: With regards to electronic/experimental artists, which band did you discover first? How did you come across them?

I am deeply touched by the first is Hijokaidan from Japan, very coincidentally heard in a one japanese comp, then get out of control through the network of underground noise into the real world.

FTR: Who or what influences you and your sound?

They are Hijokaidan、Incapacitants、The Gerogerigegege、K2、The Haters、Prurient, ect,Disorderly chaotic sound fascinated me.

FTR: What is your opinion in particular of Japanese “Nipponoise/Japanoise” looking at their main artists like Merzbow, Masonna?

Photobucket

I was deeply affected by the Japanoise, but now the new U.S. and European power-electronics/noise Some of these are also very fond of the Japanoise more “human” feeling in there, so it Naiting.

FTR: I would like to ask you if you are interested in which kind of people listen to your sound, I mean, how do you imagine him/her to be?

Really like the noise of the crowd, we performed 1-2 times per month, often very small audience, while others watch the fun, and it makes me uncomfortable.

FTR: Women seem to be a main focus of noise humiliation – in the form of album covers, themes, and track titles, are you interested in deviated or perverted sexual behaviors? If so, what attracts you so much in sexual violence, sexist language?

I like naked women at the album cover or on-site, the nude is not to discriminate against women, women to some extent is the real angel. I was fascinated by sex.

FTR: Are you interested in serial killers? Do you think they are a typical product of 20th century society, and what is your opinion about in particular American “serial killer culture” ?

To be honest not interested in the relationship between cultural background, I am more concerned about such people in China, how kind of society there is this one, I do not sing the praises for them, but they actually do some of us Many people dare not do.

FTR: If you could perform live anywhere in the world… where would it be?

Japan and Usa.

Photobucket

FTR: I’m really impressed with the sound projects coming out of the English, German and Italian scene, etc, etc. Is there any country
in particular that inspire you more than others?

I prefer the Japanoise artist, it may belong to the same reason in Asia.

FTR: Do you listen to different types of music? A secret Elvis collection perhaps?!

I like harsh noise、power electronics、free improvisation and some old pop music.

FTR: What first, chicken or the egg?

People.

FTR: Thanks for your time, Junky & Jouki.

===============================================================
INTERVIEW WITH WOOLY WOOLASTON (Colossloth)
===============================================================

BAND NAME: Colossloth
BAND MEMBERS: Just me
COUNTRY: England
GENRE: Dark ambient, experimental, electronics.
DISCOGRAPHY:loads of small label releases in uk and Europe but the main release is 2009 ‘Antipathy in nature’ LP on Doom mantra records USA
BAND WEBSITE: facebook, myspace, Twitter, etc
OTHER PROJECTS: None

========================================================================================================

FTR: Let’s start with your band name, what made you choose it for this project?

Colossloth just came about after i started the project back in 2006, i wanted something to represent
slow and heavy so a giant sloth just seemed to fit, when i first started colossloth i was
recording heavy noise doom stuff, the most popular was ‘fly silver corpse! fly!’ which ended up on
loads of compilations and even the covermount CD of zero tolerance magazine with an interview in
there too.

FTR: How would you describe your sound and working process?

The colossloth sound seems to have changed a lot since the begining, i’m more into experimenting
with electronics and not heavy guitars, the new stuff just sounds so bleak and dark it makes
me want to experiment more and more. There is no process to recording, it just happens, sometimes
it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

FTR: About the instruments and technology you use to produce the sound, do you constantly update them, or are old and cheap synths and the like still good for your purposes?

Old broken synths and samplers are the only option for me as i’m skint all the time, i look on ebay for the sampler with the button missing and distorted outputs that sell for a tenner and buy them and just see what i can do, i’m also very lucky to have made a good friend with a dance producer called Dave who has his own studio and is fasinated by the noise i make and lets me record stuff at his place, i think it’s very strange for him to listen to my ideas etc but he’s a good guy and open minded.

FTR: With regards to electronic/experimental artists, which band did you discover first? How did you come across them?

There wasn’t any band or artist in particular that i discovered first, i was always a deathmetal/punk type teenager then i got into into electronic stuff after visiting glastonbury a few times and spending time hanging about in small tents listening to odd dance music in the middle of the night, after that i found cold spring records and the rest is history.

FTR: Who or what influences you and your sound?

Im influenced by things in nature and wicca, i love to read about these things and get inspired by that, i could never wright a happy melody or something upbeat as it’s not in my nature haha, i’m a dark gloomy noise kind of guy, that’s all i can do. i don’t consider myself a musician in any way shape or form, i have no interest in learning to play an instrument, i just wanna fuck about with stuff until i can make it sound like something new.

FTR: What type of format do you prefer regarding an album release? Cassette/CD/Download/Vinyl?

I think all formats have their charm but nothing looks as cool as vinyl! just something beautiful about it, i’ve just done my first download only track on final trauma recordings and i like the idea of click on the button then have the track.

FTR: What is your opinion in particular of Japanese “Nipponoise/Japanoise” looking at their main artists like Merzbow, Masonna?

Yeah i love it, Merzbow is a proper fucking legend, i find Japanoise more future sounding, it seems to be on a whole different level, i’m no expert on these matters but i like what i like and i fucking like Merzbow.

FTR: I would like to ask you if you are interested in which kind of people listen to your sound, I mean, how do you imagine him/her to be?

Good question, i’ve met a few people who have bought the colossloth LP and they seem to be normal looking people but they have this massive knowledge on noise drone doom etc and they really know there stuff, i played the summer solstice festival in wales a few years ago on a rainy sunday afternoon, about 12 people came to have a look at colossloth, 3 remained at the end of my set haha, i spoke to them all and one was a teacher from liverpool who totally got it and really enjoyed it which is cool, and the other 2 were drone heads, you know, earth, sunn 0))) type fans. Out of all the people who left, the best was a woman in a hawkwind T shirt who shouted at my wife ‘this isn’t fucking music’
and stormed off, that made my day.

FTR: Women seem to be a main focus of noise humiliation – in the form of album covers, themes, and track titles, are you interested in deviated or perverted sexual behaviours? If so, what attracts you so much in sexual violence, sexist language?

nah, not interested in the humilitation of women, it’s been done so many times by so many people.

FTR: Are you interested in serial killers? This subject matter has been covered a lot in this scene since early Whitehouse and Sutcliffe Jugend days. Do you think this is a tired subject? And Do you think they are a typical product of 20th century society? What is your
opinion about in particular American “serial killer culture” ?

Yes this is a really tired subject, so many noise/death metal bands kick the arse out of the subject that if i see a CD with a serial killers face on or song titles that reference it i’ll avoid it like the plague, it’s no longer shocking in music. is anything still shocking in music? i think trying to shock in music is so redundant, if a noiseband made an album about how to change the filter in a washing machine it’d be more interesting.

FTR: If you could do a gig anywhere in the world where would it be?

As I’m typing this (9.23pm on 9/8/2011) there is a riot in Leicester about 5miles from my home, i think if i could get an amoured vehicle and drive into the centre of town playing a colossloth set over a massive sound system on the roof, that’d be pretty fucking cool, bottles and bricks bouncing off the speakers etc.

FTR: I’m really impressed with the sound projects coming out of the English, German and Italian scene, etc, etc. Is there any country in particular that inspire you more than others?

England at the moment for sure, so much good stuff on small quality labels being passed about and it’s very fresh and exciting, with artists such as Iron fist of the sun, and labels like final trauma, dark meadow, and ltd edition releases that have so much passion in the artwork and a real honesty to it.

FTR: Thank you for that. I can’t help but notice there are a lot of artists in this scene (with no real x-factor or original approach) who seem to gain a reputation for being a “great band” only on the basis that we’re aware of their project name. This is through extreme networking, sticking with safe, tried and tested, copied and replicated noise/PE sounds and style. Releasing 30+ albums per year based on no real subject matter, and kissing the right ass along the way. Would you prefer an artist to gain status through raw talent and dedication, rather than using this method? I would like to know your thoughts regarding this rushed approach…

I’m not sure why and how some artists can release so many CD’s in a short space of time, that’s why I get pissed off with some labels who want to put a colossloth cd out then an ep then a split all in a month, fuck that, it takes me ages to record stuff, i honestly believe that when you put something out on a label you should get out and promote the fucking thing, show some respect to the label who have spent money on you, don’t keep thrashng out loads of tracks for them to release that no one will ever hear because you don’t go out and gig etc,

FTR: Do you listen to different types of music? A secret Elvis collection perhaps?!

I listen to anything, from sludge metal to dark jazz, i’m not a classic fan of Elvis or the beatles etc, i’m always looking for something new to get excited about, i just love surfing the net and finding new bands and falling in love with them…. and then dumping them as soon as something newer and more beautiful comes along, the circle of life.

FTR: What first, chicken or the egg?!

Obviously neither exist, like dinosaurs or spain

FTR: I like it! Anything else you would like to add here….

Yeah, cheers for listening to my random self indulgent bollocks, and cheers keith, for putting out ‘Black deeds from dead seeds’.

FTR: You’re more than welcome. Cheers Wooly!

=========================================================================================================

FTR: Let’s start with your band name, what made you choose it for this project?

The sound of “Dental Work” reminds me of every aspect of the term. The pre-appointment anxiety, the muffled high of the laughing gas, the precision injection of chemicals and their face numbing narcotic effect, the endless drilling of bone fragment, the ripping reality of extraction, flowing blood, weightless delirium, the post-surgical re-assembly stitching, the endless painful recovery.

FTR: How would you describe your sound and working process?

This project is a de-tuned regurgitation of sound and imagery that I feel the lust to create, capture, manipulate, and export in a ritualistic manner. This “music” is an unclassifiable genre of its own, melding all kinds of sounds. It is a rare mixture of Musique Concrete, Extreme Psychedelic, Anxiety, Experimental, Harsh Noise, Diseased Power Electronics, Microwaved Ganja Gangsta Salsa, Dish Washer Cream Puff Pop, Laundryhazmat Hyphy Gorgonzola, Clitoris Booster Shot Show Tunes, Hallucinogenic 8-Bit/16-Bit/Chip Deformities, Improv, Post-Breakcore, Post-Industrial, IDM, Ghettotech, Tape Manipulations, Glitch, DIY Punk, Cut-Up Audio Nightmare Recreations, Supernatural AM Radio Transmissions,, Keta-Drone, Lysergic Turntable-ism, Maximum Discomfort, Spiritual De-pantsing, Rigorous Mental Questioning, Forbidden Pre-teen Fascinations , Ebony Pornography Obsessions, Authentic Mexican Restaurant Addictions, Duct Tape/Broken VHS Tape Mutilation, Frantic Blow-up Doll Destruction, Unnecessary Panic, Heart Attack Speed Turntable Thrust, Rusty Knife Wielding Eccentric Masturbation, LSD Laced Childhood Flashbacks, Extra Terrestrial OUIJA Freak outs, Shamanistic Ketamine Blackouts, Ritualistic Bukakke Ceremonies, OG Owl Shift Hustlin’, Chopped & Screwed Grindcore, Cross-Dressing Nomadic Pee-Pee Noise, 24/7 Norweigan Black Metal Tributes, Prostitute Pop Poop Sound Collage, Sonic Queso Drenched Neo Arabic/Russian Hardcore, Post-Apocalyptic Ghetto Warfare, German PK380 Recollections, Found Sounds, Avant-Garde, Warped Delerious Tropical Free Jazz/Cannibalism, Subliminal Messages, Outsider Trash Art, Deteriorating Anti-Religious Christmas Jingles On Psilocybin Sojourns, and anything else I decide to meddle with! I use a variety of methods for recording and editing. My live show is a whole other story! Full of controversial theatrics, drag, improv sound manipulation, crowd interaction, humiliation, degredation, toys, costumes, knives, hatchets, saws, danger, uncertainty and a mean buzz to kick it all of! I am in a constant state of evolution!

FTR: About the instruments and technology you use to produce the sound, do you constantly update them, or are old and cheap synths and the like still good for your purposes?

I am constantly bringing in new elements to experiment with. My life has been centered around sound for as long as I can remember. My dad used to install audio equipment and I would always go to work with him so we always had a ton of obscure electronics laying around. My parents and grandparents encouraged my musical interests, and I would regularly take me to record stores, instrument shops, pawn shops, museums, and thrift stores, as a kid. I started with Piano, Harmonica, Guitar, Turntables, and Bass when I was young, and then I just went crazy once I figured out how to get high and professionally record via mixers and computers! Now I Use: Knives, Hatchets, Bones, AM Radios, Fruit (Buddah’s Paw), Hacksaw, Fans, Duct Tape, Percussion De Grizelda (DIY instrument I made), Boss DD-6 Delay, Boss Digital Delay DD-3 Pedal, Contact Mics, Ion TT USB Turntables, Boss Metal Zone MT-2 Pedal, Super NES, Found Sounds, Micro Casette Player, Peavy 4 String Bass Guitar, Blow Up Dolls, Pre-Teen Clothing, Bandanas, Raincoats, Mexican Frankenstain Masks, First Act Microphones, Magix Audio Studio 10 Deluxe, Magix MIDI 10, FC Twin,Boss Dr. Rythm DR-3 Drum Machine, Whistles, Nintendo GameBoy Pocket, Mario Paint, Chop Sticks, Webbed Car Parts, Combat Boots, Loving Lamb, Old Video Tapes, Cardboard, A Box Of Cereal, Toshiba Satellite Laptop, Behringer Eurorack MX 602A, Magix 15, Nintendo 64, PS2, Dell Pentium 4 Desktop CPU, Oujia Board, A Pair Of Little Girls Shoes, Sony PS-LX250H Turntable, Dennon DRA-275R Amp, Dennon DCD-695, Tredex TX-3000 DVD Player, Old Movies, Records, Samples, Voices, Foreign Language Books On Tape, Video Games, LSD, A Switchblade, Super Mario Effects Keychain, Wigs, Duck Calls, Mini-skirts, Weird Toys from the 80′s and 90′s, Yamaha Portasound PCS-500 Keyboard, Casio CTK-519 Keyboard, Paint Markers, Crate BX-15 Amp, Peavy KB 15 Amp,Peavy 8 Channel Mixer, Famitracker, Atomix, Pornography, Flarp! Noise Putty, My Genetalia, A Coffee Grinder, 4 Piece Dental Pick And Hook Set, EVERYTHING IS AN INSTRUMENT!

FTR: With regards to electronic/experimental artists, which band did you discover first? How did you come across them?

Well, I’d say it started with Frank Zappa at a very young age for me, In the 90’s I was also listening to a variety of alternative, death/black metal, comedy, hardcore, west coast/Midwest/southern hip hop/rap, a few electronic artists, and a ton of other random styles of music. In 1999 I read a review for Agoraphobic Nosebleed in Alternative Press, and I was very curious. I picked up “PCP Torpedo” by AGNB and my introduction to Merzbow took place….He remixed one of their tracks on the bonus disc, and I fell in love! I started avidly researching more extreme grind and noise, through magazines and online. I eventually stumbled across the artists Necroanal, Scissor Shock, Bubblegum Octopus, RedSK, and the labels Relapse Records, Crucial Blast, and Dadaist Audio out of the Netherlands. These were resources for some of the most fucked up material I had ever heard, and I wanted to take it even further. My noise addiction was really beginning to flourish at this point. I knew it was time to quit my day job and dedicate my life to making and releasing the weirdest sounds I could find on the planet.

FTR: What type of format do you prefer regarding an album release? Cassette/CD/Download/Vinyl?

I have releases available in all of these formats, and I think they are all brilliant forms of media delivery! My music collection/obsession began around 1990, so I of course a huge fan of cassette, CD, and vinyl. I suppose if I had to pick one it would be vinyl, simply because it shows the dedication to the music. Anybody can burn a cd-r and to a lesser extent dub a tape, but going through the process of getting your music on vinyl is no joke! I respect and love each variety of format in the end I suppose!

FTR: What is your opinion in particular of Japanese “Nipponoise/Japanoise” looking at their main artists like Merzbow, Masonna?

I absolutely love noise from Japan, and pretty much anything from Japan! Especially pornography! Merzbow was the first noise artist I ever heard, so I praise him. Masonna has some really intense material also……I am also way into Hijokaiden, Government Alpha and Boredoms. I plan on touring to Japan in 2012, and I will be setting up shows with NRYY, Noiseconcrete, Absurdgod, Hujiko Pro, Nankotsu Teacher, and more! One of my main labels who releases my music is in Japan, called Silent Novel Records. Norihito Kodaima is a great guy. I really appreciate his effort on the release of my full length “Snitch Carnitas”. There are so many unique projects coming from Japan!

FTR: I would like to ask you if you are interested in which kind of people listen to your sound, I mean, how do you imagine him/her to be?

Every gender/race is welcome to take part in the experience of Dental Work, I adore Arab girls, Black girls, Latina girls, White girls, Indian girls, Native American girls, Italian girls, Asian girls, and all kinds of humans/animals/aliens. I am probably more interested in the people who don’t listen to my sound, I imagine them as close minded conservative/religious imbeciles with rotting genetalia, organs, and ideals. Keep your friends close and enemies closer!

FTR: Women seem to be a main focus of noise humiliation – in the form of album covers, themes, and track titles, are you interested in deviated or perverted sexual behaviors? If so, what attracts you so much in sexual violence, sexist language?

My art is very difficult. Controversial innocence if you will. I have been addicted to pornography from a young age, and I am an admitted nymphomaniac, pervert, voyeur, sex addict. This is reflected in my song titles and artwork content. Although I may talk about it, I am not “into” sexual violence, I do find it an extremely interesting subject that should not be hidden or overlooked. I am on the other hand into sexual humiliation/certain fetish/bondage. There is nothing like sitting back with a fat joint and a good flick!

FTR: Are you interested in serial killers? This subject matter has been covered a lot in this scene since early Whitehouse and Sutcliffe Jugend days. Do you think this is a tired subject? And Do you think they are a typical product of 20th century society? What is your opinion about in particular American “serial killer culture” ?

When I was in school I was always bored with the subject matter, so I would instead read books constantly in opposition. My favorite subjects were drugs, history, politics, geography, autobiographies, psychology, anatomy, true crime and serial killers! I have always been very fascinated with the psyche of the serial killer….I have numerous books in my personal library on the subject, and I have had many songs in tribute to certain “celebs”. I even named my cat (the one on a number of my album covers) after the prison that the worlds most famous cannibal killer Andrei Chikatilov spent his final days (Rostov On-Don)! There will always be a place in my heart for serial killer culture, of course I don’t condone this behavior, for many reasons.

FTR: If you could do a gig anywhere in the world where would it be?

Wow there are so many places I would still love to play! Anywhere in Europe/Middle East/Asia, I would love to play in Beirut, Lebanon – Berlin, Germany – Frankfurt, Germany – Moscow, Russia – New York City, NY, – Rome, Italy – Tokyo, Japan – Shang-Hai, China – Mexico City, Mexico – Danzig, Poland – Salzburg, Austria – Athens, Greece – Baghdad, Iraq – Osaka, Japan – Madrid, Spain – Belgrade, Serbia – London, England – Oslo, Norway.

FTR: I’m really impressed with the sound projects coming out of the English, German and Italian scene, etc, etc. Is there any country in particular that inspire you more than others?

I am really feeling a lot of stuff coming out of Austria and Italy right now! Salzburg, Austria has a ton of sick noise/break core/electronics/grind going on, I recommend the labels: System Breakdown Recordings, Noise Park Activities, and Epileptic Media for starts! Italy has been blowing me away with the extremely perverted harsh noise, violence, and grind, similar to some Japanese schools of thought. Check out Lips Infection Records, Venta Protesix, Bologna Violenta, Intercamalemelont, TSIDMZ, and Lolita Vibrator Torture for an glimpse of “Shitaly”! My label (Placenta Recordings) has been on an active spree of releasing artists from all over the globe, focusing on U.S., Japan, Germany, Italy, Austria, China, Russia, Mexico, Indonesia, Spain, Australia, France, Malaysia, Brazil, Canada, Scotland, Bosnia, Serbia, Venezuela, Poland, Lebanon, Kuwait, Thailand, Iran, UK, and more! Artists from these locations should get in touch! Dental Work wants to do splits with you!

FTR: I can’t help but notice there are a lot of artists in this scene (with no real x-factor or original approach) who seem to gain a reputation for being a “great band” only on the basis that we’re aware of their project name.

There will always be fake ass brainwashed bandwagon jumping copycat fucks prowling/prodding around every music scene, but I know what you mean w/ some of these chumps. I see a lot of ideas being stolen, I see labels trying to use the same formulas, I see distros selling bootlegs of independent labels/artists material, I see people standing in front of laptops and hip noise generating pedals and calling themselves a performer, but where is the energy, heart, and dedication? Copied style/boring art will get these guys nowhere unless they are rich and can afford to release their own “work”, and even then, it probably won’t make a substantial impact, so no need to worry!

FTR: Do you listen to different types of music? A secret Elvis collection perhaps?!

People always criticize me for my perverse musical taste. Besides noise/grind/psychedelic/electronics, I am a huge fan of Lebanese Folk, German Pop, Italian Disco, Norwegian Black Metal, Japanese 8-Bit, West Coast/Midwest/Southern U.S. Rap, Female Pop and R & B Singers, and so much more! Im going to list 100 artists/acts/groups/bands that I hold near and dear, just to show the diversity in my music library (Keep in mind I have a room full of vinyl records, cds, cassettes, and an external hard drive full of audio that I have been collecting for 20 years!) Here is a few favorites: Eazy-E, Too $hort, Burzum, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Mac Dre, Sabrepulse, Patsy Cline, Guns N’ Roses, Prince, GWAR, Nirvana, 2 Live Crew, Esham, DJ Screw, James Brown, Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention, Pink Floyd, Slick Rick, GG Allin, Napalm Death, Barbra Streisand, Kraftwerk, Bjork, Koji Kondo, Ice-T, Marilyn Manson, Pearl Jam, Genghis Tron, Parliament Funkadelic, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, The Dayton Family, Caroliner, South Park Mexican, Immortal, Acid Mothers Temple, Buckethead, Dan Deacon, Cypress Hill, Phish, Melt-Banana, Public Enemy, Black Box, Black Mayonnaise, Frank Sinatra, Sun Ra, Brujeria, Cannibal Corpse, George Carlin, Butthole Surfers, Cheech & Chong, Realicide, Jackson 5, Geto Boys, Merzbow, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Yma Sumac, Diamanda Galas, The Doors, Danzig, The Beatles, Deicide, Three 6 Mafia, Clotted Symmetric Sexual Organ, The Meatshits, Scissor Shock, Beyonce, Mindless Self Indulgence, Venetian Snares, Juvenile, LL Cool J, KRS-One, Venom, Kawaiettly Please, Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Lords Of Acid, Anal Cunt, Charles Manson, Necro, C-Murder, Darkthrone, Mayhem, Clandestine Blaze, Skinny Puppy, Consumer Electronics, Twodeadslutsonegoodfuck, Dice, Dead Kennedys, Donna Summer, Warren G, Dr. Dre, Doormouse, William Sides Atari Party, Madonna, Styrofoam Sanchez, Kompressor, Atari Teenage Riot, and Project Born and of course all of the artists on Placenta Recordings! All of those artists have inspired me in one way or another over the years, and I thank each and every one of them! Speaking if labels, I also enjoy all of the sounds on these labels: Dadaist Audio, System Breakdown Recordings, Noise Park Activities, Nail In The Coffin Records, Trashfuck Net/Records, Scotch Tapes, Fuck Off And DIY, Pray For Death Productions, Parkinson Wankfist Pleasures, Immigrant Breast Nest, Crumbling Peak , Corpus Callosum, Silent Novels Records, Love Earth Music, Ratskin Records, Free Noise, Final Trauma Recordings, and Flaccid Plastic Records!

FTR: What first, chicken or the egg?!

Neither ever actually existed. They were figments of man’s imagination. This conclusion was determined under extensive psilocybin cubensis therapy!

FTR: …Of course! Anything else you would like to add here….

Thank you for your time and dedication Keith! Keep up the good work, I will keep sending you music! Come see me perform, I promise I won’t hurt you!

FTR: Hurt me! Hurt me!! Cheers ‘n’ beers, Mr. Watson.

FTR: Let’s start with your band name, what made you choose it for this project?

It is derived from the name of Julius Streicher. It fitted what I wanted to do perfectly and there was never a question of any other choice. It embodies many interests and issues, from philosophies of ideology, morality, history, subculture, image, perception, reality and simulacra, to the questions of censorship and freedom of speech. And bringing an Oi/skinhead attack to power electronics for the first time.

FTR: How would you describe your sound and working process?

The term ‘Oi Noise’ has been coined (not by me) to describe the Streicher sound. It is basically a mix of power electronics and industrial with some harsh noise elements at times. My working process has always been the same; get it done in the most primitive and direct analog way without resorting to any digitalized or laptop shit.

FTR: About the instruments and technology you use to produce the sound, do you constantly update them, or are old and cheap synths and the like still good for your purposes?

The latter, definitely. Though old, some are not cheap; quite valuable these days in fact.

FTR: With regards to electronic/experimental artists, which band did you discover first? How did you come across them?

I discovered Whitehouse in around 1982, an LP I bought from a local record shop down the other end of the street from the little flat I was living in, Greville Street, Prahran. I bought it without really knowing what it was, but the cover looked very obscure and intriguing. Blew me away when I played it. I later got in touch with William Bennett and bought all I could of their other material, and this contact set me on the course that was to define the arc of my life from that point on.

FTR: Who or what influences you and your sound?

Aside from those early influences of Whitehouse, M.B., and the Broken Flag, Iphar and Aquilifer Sodality labels, I have in some ways been subtly influenced by everything from Heldon to Anton Bruckner, in musical terms, and with Streicher there have always been strong inspirations from the skinhead scene as well as art, politics and history in various forms.

FTR: Regarding the myspace noise culture/what could be seen as the myspace noise race. It appears there are an awful lot of releases coming out by a large amount of noise artists, spamming page after page throughout myspace with their 50+ album release this year. What are your thoughts regarding this rushed approach?

It reflects the positing of noise as constantly available commodity, albeit a valueless commodity in financial terms as it’s being made freely available via downloads and so on. On the other hand, it can also be looked at as subverting that commodification, as it’s really not done for the express purpose of selling ‘product’. Either way, I am not opposed to it, there is a place for it, although I can understand that some people may feel it is indicative of the ease with which harsh noise can be digitally constructed these days, as well as the ease with which a site such as Myspace can be utilised to disseminate it.

I still remember the early days back in the 1980s, when this music was so underground, there was no internet, and how exciting it would be to get a new LP or tape in the mail. Now, with so much available and such instant access, that thrill has largely gone. There’s a degree of overload and saturation, common also to other genres as well, and you perhaps have to dig harder to uncover the real quality material. Having said that, I think that Myspace is a useful tool for artists to put their material out there and say fuck you to the music business and I personally support that. What I don’t support is the arbitrary censorship and political/ideological prejudice that the Myspace brains trust routinely engages in, but that’s another story.

FTR: What is your opinion in particular of Japanese “Nipponoise/Japanoise” looking at their main artists like Merzbow, Masonna, and the most recent developments of today’s so called “power-electronics/noise” scene?

In purely sonic terms, as someone who has always tended more towards lower-end crunch, I have never been a huge fan of the Japanese tendency towards the high-pitched squealing and squeaking that is often found in their sound. That is a generalisation, I realise, and I must say I do quite like some of the Japanese work done over the years. However, when I visited Tokyo earlier this year it was specifically for Klaus Schulze concerts (he was touring there), not for anything in the noise scene, so I guess that reflects my general priorities there.

FTR: I would like to ask you if you are interested in which kind of people listen to your sound, I mean, how do you imagine him/her to be?

I never really give it that much thought. There are all kinds of people, and I don’t try to compartmentalise or define them or make judgments about them. I they are interested in Streicher and they get something out of listening to it, then I am happy about that and I thank them for their support.

FTR: Women seem to be a main focus of noise humiliation – in the form of album covers, themes, and track titles, are you interested in deviated or perverted sexual behaviors? If so, what attracts you so much in sexual violence, sexist language?

Extremity is always of interest, regardless of what forms it takes. Women as a main focus of noise humiliation would appear to have traditionally been the preserve of Japanese noise acts and certain others such as Macronympha, Taint, etc. Pigwhore Cunt and to some extent Pimp-Aktion Slutgun also indulge in this theme in specific ways, but it requires familiarity with the context and experience in the fetish/BDSM scene as I have had (as a Dom) to understand that it does not necessarily have anything to do with “a general negative attitude towards women”. There may be a general negative attitude towards humanity, but that’s altogether different, heh heh.

Photobucket

FTR: Are you interested in serial killers? Do you think they are a typical product of 20th century society, and what is your opinion about in particular American “serial killer culture” ?

Serial killers have always been a staple theme within industrial/noise culture, since the earliest days, however much of a standard cliché it has become by now. Again, I think it’s part of the general attraction to thematic extremity and having the music reflect that. I’ve had a significant collection of books on serial killers since I was quite young, and it’s still an interest for me in the context of ethics and moral philosophy. However, I am much more interested in a subject like Tsutomu Miyazaki than I am in the more famous American cases. There are countless books on Gacy, Bundy, Dahmer, et al, but not one book on Miyazaki. The only real coverage he has is a few pages in Robert Ressler’s “I Have Lived In The Monster”(Ressler, by the way, coined the term ‘serial killer’).

Americans always seem to think they are the centre of the universe, so any second-rate serial murderer gets massive coverage in the media, whilst much more interesting and extreme cases from other countries barely get a look in. Like Miyazaki, or even the ongoing ‘femicides’ in Ciudad Juárez. There’s this degree of arrogance that if it doesn’t involve Americans then it doesn’t really count. It’s the same in general terms; a couple of thousand humans die in 9/11 and you’d think that armageddon was around the corner (an ex-girlfriend of mine who was living in upstate New York when 9/11 happened actually felt this was so much the case that she had a complete mental breakdown over it; ridiculous). The wailing and gnashing of teeth still hasn’t abated. But when many thousands more die in other parts of the globe, through war, terrorism, genocide or natural disasters, and it’s not involving Americans, it’s like ho-hum, what a shame, “have a nice day!”.

FTR: If you could do a gig anywhere in the world where would it be?

London, circa 1983, gigging with Produktion, Whitehouse, Kleistwahr etc, or with Sir Oswald Mosley at the British Union of Fascists rally at Earl’s Court in 1939 (the largest indoor event in the world at the time) if you can rent me a time machine! Failing that, I’d say Germany, in the deep basement bomb shelter I’ve visited in Nuremberg, or, number one, the Obergruppenführersaal and vault (which has specially designed acoustics and illumination) of Wewelsburg Castle, the SS-kult site, which I also spent an amazing time at in 1996. I also went to the Zeppelin Tribune at Nuremberg where the huge rallies were held and that would be an impressive locale for a live Streicher rally. I stood on the steps there and imagined addressing the multitude with a severe storm of Streicher power electronics, ha ha. But there’s not a lot left of the original architecture, and the interior has been turned into the usual boo-hooing reparational exhibit of sackcloth and ashes.

FTR: I’m really impressed with the sound projects coming out of the English and Italian scene, etc. Is there any country in particular that inspire you more than others?

As far as industrial/noise music projects go, no, I don’t tend to think in national terms these days. Maybe different countries go through different periods creatively within a scene or subculture. Which reminds me, there’s always been a strong underground Black Metal presence from Nordic countries such as Norway, Sweden and nowadays especially Finland, but can anyone explain why that other Scandinavian nation, Denmark, has never seemed to have as much impact in Black Metal? They produce some great speedway riders, but Black Metal and Pagan warriors seem comparatively thin on the ground there for some unknown reason.

FTR: Do you listen to different types of music? A secret Elvis collection perhaps?!

Fuck Elvis with a steamhammer, but yes, I have a very broad taste in music and a massive LP/CD/tape/78s collection, including serious classical, opera, Berlin-school/French electronics & Krautrock/prog, skinhead Oi & RAC, free jazz & improv, black metal & death/grind. I have been an inveterate record collector since my teens and show no signs of letting up. Music is the food of the gods to me, I can’t
live without it.

And I’m kind of old-school about it; I will occasionally download something to check it out, but I much prefer the physicality of playing and enjoying a real LP record. There is a time-honoured ritual involved in the process, which still has the power to subvert this plug-and-play world we are now stuck with. Removing the album carefully from the shelf, warming up the Valvemark tube amps and setting pre-amp level (I’m an audiophile and appreciate top sound quality), cleaning the vinyl surface and stylus, cueing up the turntable and settling down in a comfortable couch with a cold beer (or perhaps a nice Verdelho or my favourite Dubonnet aperitif, depending on the weather and what I’m listening to), to peruse the cover and liner notes as the music begins to magically issue forth from my magnificent Hornshoppe speakers! That’s really listening to music, not sitting at a computer screen clicking a download file or playing crappy mp3’s on an iPod.

Maybe I’m showing my age and generation here, but I don’t care; you’ll never convince me that these are in any way advances on LP or even CD technology. Sure, maybe in portability and ‘convenience’, but if you’re not lazy then only the sound should matter, ultimately, so get off your arse and play a record! Even the new lossless file servers which the audiophile magazines are starting to cover leave me cold. I’m not interested. Same as I don’t give two shits about multi-channel surround sound and all that home-theatre crap. It’s overblown gimmickry, not natural or absolute sound in any respect. Stereo (and even mono) is where it’s at for me.

So Elvis can stay out of my house, but I do confess to a periodic weakness for early blues and country/old timey music from the 1920s-40s, and have occasionally been known to indulge in the recordings of British and German singers and radio/music hall artists of the period. However, my major interest in recordings of that era (and even earlier) has always been classical conductors, instrumentalists and singers, especially Wagnerian heldentenors.

FTR: What first, chicken or the egg?

I eat both, not in any particular order.

===============================================================

FTR: Let’s start with your band name, what made you choose it for this project?

BAGMAN: Since I was [probably too] young I’ve been infatuated with the darkest side of true human behaviour, & when I read an extremely disturbing extract in “Killing For Culture” by David Slater & David Kerekes,I was particularly fascinated……

It was a long, long time ago that I read the piece, but it stayed with me.When I began the Bagman project I wanted to create a sound that reflected the thought processes of such a deviant approach to life.Since then it’s become mixed up with my own mental problems [I've suffered from Bipolar Disorder & Obsessive Compulsive Disorder for over 20 years].

FTR: How would you describe your sound and working process?

BAGMAN
: My sound is a mixture of harsh noise & extreme electronics including heavily distorted vocals [the majority of which are indecipherable]-i try to avoid the term “power electronics” purely because it was invented by William Bennett & first featured on the inlay notes of “Psychopathia Sexualis”.Undoubtedly one of their stronger albums [certainly better than Racket!],but i don’t think my own sound owes much to it.
I perform & record all my tracks live,in one take & with no post production or overdubs.I respect how other artists wish to work, but this is an important part of my project for me.Maybe a hangover from my punk days……
I don’t see what I do as music [although it may have musical elements],but more a form of sound art-albeit one with a nihilistic aesthetic.Because of this,it’s very much about what I create in the moment, & not about perfecting a “song”.I regard my work as almost pure catharsis, & only record in order to have physical evidence of my “actions”.

FTR: How would you describe your sound and working process?

BAGMAN: My sound is a mixture of harsh noise & extreme electronics including heavily distorted vocals [the majority of which are indecipherable]-i try to avoid the term “power electronics” purely because it was invented by William Bennett & first featured on the inlay notes of “Psychopathia Sexualis”.Undoubtedly one of their stronger albums [certainly better than Racket!],but i don’t think my own sound owes much to it.I perform & record all my tracks live,in one take & with no post production or overdubs.I respect how other artists wish to work, but this is an important part of my project for me.Maybe a hangover from my punk days……I don’t see what I do as music [although it may have musical elements],but more a form of sound art-albeit one with a nihilistic aesthetic.Because of this,it’s very much about what I create in the moment, & not about perfecting a “song”.I regard my work as almost pure catharsis, & only record in order to have physical evidence of my “actions”.

FTR: About the instruments and technology you use to produce the sound, do you constantly update them, or are old and cheap synths and the like still good for your purposes?

BAGMAN: These days I stick with the same set-up of……

=MICROKORG ANALOG MODELING SYNTH

=KORG ES-1 MKII SAMPLER

=CUSTOM BUILT DUO SYNTH

=DANELECTRO TAPE DELAY

=BOSS DS-1 DISTORTION UNIT

=BEHRINGER DS100 DISTORTION MODELER

-DANELECTRO TREMOLO PEDAL

=VOICE

=MICROPHONES

=SCRAP METAL

=NAILS

=ELECTRIC DRILL

=SHAVER

=FEEDBACK

=CLAW HAMMER

=PANASONIC RX-SW/LW RADIO STATIC

=BELCAT TRANSDUCER

=HOHNER 64 CHROMONICA

=ALTO AX100 10 CHANNEL MIXER

=M.AUDIO MICRO TRACK II RECORDER

It’s taken a while to put together the equipment I use, & aside from adding to my scrap metal collection,I’ve got no intention of changing it.I personally prefer hand’s_on machines to digital programs, & I’ve now got pretty much all I need to create the sonic equivalent of my rage……

FTR: With regards to electronic/experimental artists, which band did you discover first? How did you come across them?

BAGMAN: Hmmm, that’s a question that could receive a long answer……in short[ish];age 13/14[I'm now 31]I was into punk & grindcore [Crass, early Napalm Death etc.],when I discovered bands like Front 242 & early Skinny Puppy. From reading about the influences cited by those bands in magazines like Ultraviolence,I tracked down lots of vinyl & video by Throbbing Gristle. They changed everything for me…I was about 15……At the time I was a bass player, & proceeded to buy various pedals to make my sound more & more outlandish. Then, during the breakdown of a relationship in my 20′s,I discovered the work of Sutcliffe Jugend-I still think that they are the strongest of extreme electronics artists working today.

FTR: Who or what influences you and your sound?

BAGMAN: A lot of my material is based around my own personal experiences with mental health issues, addiction & [more obviously] sexual deviance. The darker side of human nature has always been an interest of mine, & so I’ve been drawn to the literature of DAF DeSade,Peter Sotos,Aleister Crowley,William S.Burroughs & the amazing Ian Stewart Brady. Also true crime works by the likes of Brian Masters,Colin Wilson,Donald Rumbelow,Christopher Berry-Dee,Wensley Clarkson,Martin Fido,Howard Sounes & Jimmy Lee Shreeve, & accounts of the life & crimes of killers like [especially] Kenneth”Mad Dog”McKenna,Ian Stewart Brady,Steve Wright,Peter Sutcliffe,Joachim Kroll,Peter Kurten,Carl Panzram,Charles Manson,Graham Young,Pedro Lopez,Albert DeSalvo,Gary Ridgeway,Albert Fish,Gary Heidnik,Theodore Robert Bundy,Kenneth Bianchi,Angelo Buono,Donald”Pee Wee”Gaskins,Dean Corll,John Wayne Gacy,Dennis Nilsen,Henry Lee Lucas,Ottis Toole,Karla Homolka,Richard Speck,Edmund Kemper,Fritz Haarmann,Ed Gein,Gilles De Rais,Marc Dutroux,Leonard Lake,Charles Ng,David Berkowitz,Lawrence Bittaker,Andrei Chikatilo,Jeffrey Dahmer,Aileen Wuornos,Fred & Rose West,Ivan Milat,Dennis Rader & Arthur J.Shawcross.Third Reich history & war atrocity has featured in some of my early unreleased works, & continues to heavily interest me-I am currently working on tracks that concern particular ladies of that era. Since childhood,I’ve been a confirmed horror movie/video nasty/extreme cinema addict,so the influence of films like Salo,Cannibal Holocaust,I Spit On Your Grave,Flower Of Flesh & Blood etc have featured heavily in my material-I’ve released various single track movie tribute’s on Final Trauma Recordings. And finally,my fascination with BDSM,gas mask fetish, bondage pornography & transgressive art/photography from [among others] Pauline Barnet,Gilles Berquet,Hermann Nitsch,Otto Muehl and Jake & Dinos Chapman.

FTR: Regarding the myspace noise culture/what could be seen as the myspace noise race, it appears there are an awful lot of releases coming out by a large amount of “noise” artists, spamming page after page throughout myspace with their 50+ album release this year. What are your thoughts regarding this rushed approach?

BAGMAN: Ha ha ha!I fucking LOVE that question!I think MySpace has been both the best & worst thing I have ever been involved with. On the plus side,I’ve met some amazing people like [sadly defunct] Slut Kull & Gas Chamber, who I’m proud to call friends,as well as a host of strong UK & overseas artists. However,I’ve had various problems on there due to censorship [I've been deleted repeatedly], & there is a whole lot of meaningless white static noise out there that I don’t especially want to advertise via my page! I know the situation now-I simply deny any fucker trying to push empty, faceless spam my way.If it’s something I like,I’ll shout it from the rooftops, though……I tend to record only when I have something to express, & if that were the case for the artists pouring out factory_line style releases,it wouldn’t be so bad.Unfortunately,I think the majority are trying to make a name for themselves by flooding the scene.

FTR: What is your opinion in particular of Japanese “Nipponoise/Japanoise” looking at their main artists like Merzbow, Masonna, and the most recent developments of today’s so called “power-electronics/noise” scene?

BAGMAN: In short-I think it’s hugely overrated. In my experience, the live performances by Hijokaidan far outweigh the power of their recorded works, & Masami Akita’s Merzbow mostly just bores me. A hell of a lot of it leaves me cold-I’m not sure if it’s just because of the east/west cultural differences that I find it hard to relate. There are exceptions for me,though-I think Pain Jerk,Government Alpha & Incapacitants produce some strong sounds.

FTR: I would like to ask you if you are interested in which kind of people listen to your sound, I mean, how do you imagine him/her to be?

BAGMAN: I tend never to think about it when I’m actually creating sound. It’s purely,100% about a personal emotion I’m trying to express, & being conscious of other people’s opinions would make it difficult for me to work. I’ve been very flattered by some of the people who have shown support for my project-it seems to be mostly other male extreme artists, though!A few ladies have been open minded enough to have given Bagman a chance, but they are quite rare!

Photobucket

FTR: Women seem to be a main focus of noise humiliation – in the form of album covers, themes, and track titles, are you interested in deviated or perverted sexual behaviors? If so, what attracts you so much in sexual violence and sexist language?

BAGMAN: As I mentioned,I have a huge personal interest in BDSM & consider myself a [sexual] dominant. This has been expressed by a large body of my work, & I see it as a vital ingredient in my make_up:not just as an artist, but as a person.I have had some bad experiences with women & relationships in the past, & again, the catharsis element is very important to me.Without this as an outlet,I may have been out there raping & murdering!Who knows?? I’m certainly not a misogynist,though-I’ve recently completed a split album with Ro So Matix, & she has been an absolute joy to work with.A great lady.

FTR: Are you interested in serial killers? Do you think they are a typical product of 20th century society, and what is your opinion about in particular American “serial killer culture”?

BAGMAN: As I’ve already bored the arse off you on the subject,my opinion should be fairly obvious!!However,I’m never one to turn down the opportunity to talk about one of my favourite subjects at [great] length. The extreme nature of, & acts by these men [& women] absolutely fascinates me-I’ve felt like that for as long as I can remember.Around the age of 7 I started to read about this phenomenon, & it’s possible that it’s affected me slightly! I’ve released albums inspired by the exploits of Kenneth McKenna,Henry Lee Lucas & Rose West, & tracks that have included inspiration from Colin Ireland,Jeffrey Dahmer,Dennis Nilsen,Robert Black & Alexander Pichushkin. My first [released] album was named after words in a letter from David Berkowitz, & “art” comprised of crime scene photography has often made up the covers for these releases. Serial offence has no doubt always been a part of human nature, & therefore with us since the dawn of man.I think it’s only advances in technology & communications that have made it seem like a problem purely of modern society.I certainly don’t subscribe to the opinion that it is in any way influenced by the media-only perhaps in the “life imitating art/art imitating life” sense. America certainly seems to have almost epidemic problems with serial murder-but I think it’s only become an actual part of their culture through the constant spotlight being shined on it.All people enjoy to flirt with that dark side, & most find it safest to do so from a comfortable distance-but how many of us can honestly say we’ve never felt genuine murderous rage?If you look into your subconscious, you will find amazing enlightening things, but also parts of the psyche that will terrify.

FTR: If you could do a gig anywhere in the world where would it be?

BAGMAN: In the dungeon of a 16 stone dominatrix.

FTR: I’m really impressed with the sound projects coming out of the English and Italian scene, etc. Is there any country in particular that inspires you more than others?

BAGMAN: Heh heh!I enjoy a lot of the American scene-Brethren,Slogun,Rosemary Malign & Blood Into Water are particular favourites of mine, but the work of Anthony Shaw [Albert Fish Is My Hero/A Machine Called Orgasm/Haemorrhaging Fetus] has been the biggest US influence on me.I can understand how anybody who doesn’t like the vocal style of one of them, won’t enjoy a lot of the others, though! They can be a little derivative.Germany has the phenomenal Genocide Organ & the hugely underrated Subliminal. I totally agree with you,though-Britain & Italy seem to be producing the strongest material at the moment. Some of my all time favourite acts are Sutcliffe Jugend,Iron Fist Of The Sun / The Sodality & Wertham [English & Italian respectively],although Finland seems to have become a very heavy hitter.Projects by Mikko Aspa [Grunt/Nicole 12/Clinic Of Torture/Pain Nail] have proved to be a great inspiration to me-nothing short of genius. As I mentioned earlier”Ro So Matix” [Italy] produces some of the best electronics I’ve ever heard, & work by England’s Inhibition/Deutsche Christen/White Walls has surpassed all expectation.

FTR: Do you listen to different types of music? A secret Elvis collection perhaps?!

BAGMAN: No Elvis in the collection,I’m afraid!
As well as Harsh Noise & Extreme Electronics I listen to original British punk like The Exploited,Crass,Discharge;RAC like Angry Aryans,English Rose,Ethnic Cleansing;old Gabba like Rotterdam Terror Corps,The Horrorist,DJ Vince;…oh, & of course “Addicted To Love” by Robert Palmer……

FTR: What first, chicken or the egg?

BAGMAN: ……Well, I just bought the chicken on Thursday……

BAND NAME: Striations

BAND MEMBERS: Mike Finklea. Live, studio, and mail trade collaborators.

COUNTRY: USA, City Of Concord, California

GENRE: Power Electronics. Musique Concrete. Post Mortem Industrial.

DISCOGRAPHY:

-Various hand dubbed cdrs and tapes given out at early live performances which began in July 2010.

-Piss, Blood-Hypnosis Cassette (Self Released) This was my official demo tape of Striations, recorded in Oakland, Davis, Sacramento, and Concord, California over the span of August 2010-March 2011. 50 copies were made and presented on Nefarious activities blog, and in person at various bay area noise shows. I am going to do another 50 copies in the near future. I am very proud of this tape and I feel it is a fully realized and very personal representation of Striations.

-Bagman / Striations – Split Tape (Nefarious Activities) The first noise I have ever released in pro printed format. I have been a fan of Bagman’s work since the inception of Striations and I felt an imperative to work with him on my first split release because we have such similar personalities and musical preferences. We approach the style of Power Electronics in completely different ways. For me, splits are all about juxtaposing similarity in artists. Also, I wanted to see Bagman release a tape and no one else was getting the job done. Bagman never asked for Cassette specifically, it was my idea. I think both sides of the tape compliment each other very well. And I was very pleased with the tracks Bagman sent me right off the bat, thank you Steve Bacon for your attention and hard work! Striations is playing Norcal Noisefest #15 in October, and Bagman is opening for Sutcliffe Jügend in a few months. I only have 6 copies of the split tape left, 412 Recordings fron Newcastle UK is repressing the split on CDR format with different artwork. [412recordings.com]

-”Spring Noise Blowout 2011″ (Nefarious Activities / CBL Recordings) A 7 Way Split CDR between Clew Of Theseus, Xome, Liver Cancer, Vankmen, klowd, Smite! and Striations. All tracks are recorded on the same night in Sacramento California, Live Aktions. Get this here: [norcalnoisefest.com]

BAND WEBSITE: http://Nefariousactivities.blogspot.com
This is where I post artwork, noise shows I have booked in the Bay Area, and releases. I have an email list you could join if you would like updates. Some have said it is cool to just have my artwork pop up in their email sometimes. I have sold tapes all over the world so far and that is very flattering considering the newness of my project, I will remain optimistic that those who have ordered so far will be returning for future releases. Nefarious Activities is also an Art/Text/Noise Zine I am doing focusing on True Crime, the first issue comes with exclusive Prurient stickers and will be completed before the end of the summer.

OTHER PROJECTS:

None as of yet, some preliminary discourse on forming a tape mail trio with Pink Sexdeath and CR from Demonologists, but we shall have to wait and see. For my own music, I am more into focusing my efforts into Striations and collaborations with others, as opposed to creating secondary side projects. I do not confine Striations to one specific sound, I use Power Electronics as a general term, but I also use plenty of microphone feedback in almost everything I do.

=========================================================================================================

FTR: Let’s start with your band name, what made you choose it for this project?

The notion of Forensic Science as a by product of western, technological, industrial, “civilization” is something listening to a lot of Carcass and going to college for English literature (specifically for studying science fiction) got me thinking about. Science is not fact, it’s fact until we create a new tool that enables us to see a new aspect of that fact. Then we change our conclusions based on this new evidence. If you apply that to the world today you realize that science is a relatively recent story of speculative fiction. Science tries very hard to become gospel and truth, but in the end, it’s fiction because we lack the tools necessary to truly see our world for what it is. We conceive of the world through our flawed human sensory organs, if you look at the amount of pollution and homicide humans are responsible for, it becomes clear we are not living harmoniously with the world, and were getting to the point where even inventing a new microscope cannot revert the damage we have caused, when I read the news sometimes I think we may have passed that point long ago. Striations is a forensic science term and that’s why I chose it. I am most excited when science is forced to speculate on pathology and death. The term Striations, tool marks on bones, holds symbolic meaning with me. Alternate definitions of the word are also relevant. The more that time goes on the more I’m convinced it was a subconscious Bone Awl reference. My band grindcore band Brutal Death played with Belabor [Pre-Bone Awl] back in the day, and it’s been enlightening to know them on a personal level, they introduced me to Brighter Death Now, for one small example. Their talent feeds me, just like many others. Striations is a word that reeks of Power Electronics.

FTR: How would you describe your sound and working process?

My work with Striations began as a tinkering experimental side project to a normal band I played in at that time. After several months, I felt the “superpower” of performing Power Electronics noise live I wanted to do it as often as I could. I made Striations my full time project. I could no longer take my “band” seriously. When that happened I quickly learned what I could do with the equipment I possessed and began to reconcile that with my ideas and intentions. Editing occasionally enables me to get what I want, but I try to compose as much live as possible. I like to record live noise. I love taking field recordings from the hospital in Concord California. I also take them from the bart trains and station, and from the streets, I often throw metal and break glass I find in public to record the sound of it. If I find a sound outside I like I will return to it with my tape player. With Striations, I want to re-present an environment in a twisted and deranged manner, because I think that’s a more honest representation of the landscape. My sound is also influenced by the theme of each piece and I use samples often. I love tape loops and filtering sound. I basically compose something on the computer and then create an electronics setup around that piece. Sometimes its just a sample and an electronics setup. I then put it in the computer and go from there if need be, but often I am happy with what I have without having to edit. I would also like to describe my sound as “Fetish Violence.”

FTR: About the instruments and technology you use to produce the sound, do you constantly update them, or are old and cheap synths and the like still good for your purposes?

My live setup always changes, currently it is a Behringer keyboard amp with multi-effects, Tapes, DOD Death Metal Original Issue, A metal grate, Various pieces of metal, a crowbar, Trogotronic 665, Boss Digital Delay, 2 Microphones, 2 Contact Mics, and a full stack, and various other amplifiers. My next setup will include my light setup and an Audible Disease Synth Bomb. If I ever acquire extra money I will try to integrate more items into my setup. Much of my equipment has been broken because I play gigs often, so I grow weary of investing in more stuff to break, and I don’t like the look of large equipment setups anyways, I feel I can do everything I want to do for all intents and purposes with the gear I have and my tape player. I also use bass and guitar to record noise and I am currently expanding the performance art emphasis of my live sets. I love all synths from cheap to vintage. I am a gear nerd for sure and I love synths because of that, I love the heavy sounds you get from using them to make noise. Deathpile GR comes to mind. Hive Mind’s “awful” live set at TERMINAL was the best synth noise I have ever seen. Synthesizers are essential for my purpose to create an authentic Power Electronics sound. I very much enjoy the pedal noise tape collage work of PE acts like Albert Fish Is My Hero, and most of my earliest unreleased stuff is like that, but I feel the synthesizer adds a presence to the sound that has a low end and is tightly controlled. I used my friends’ beautiful modular synth on a couple songs on the Piss, Blood Hypnosis Tape. On the tape, Greg Garbage used a Roland Mc 202 synthesizer, and a Roland Rs 50 is also present.

FTR: With regards to electronic/experimental artists, which band did you discover first? How did you come across them?

Richard Ramirez. I was listening to stuff like Wolf Eyes and Bastard Noise kinda in the background and I liked It but I was not “in the know” so to speak. I was playing grindcore and listening to nothing but hardcore bands like SIEGE, RAPT,YDI,SOB and SM-70 and every lo-fi grindcore band on the planet all day long. Fear Of God and Napalm Death were my two favorite bands in high school. I was reading the book The Night Stalker and somehow looked up Richard Ramirez on Soulseek, the album titles started to pop up, “The Science of Dissecting Society” “Certain Cruelty” “Bleeding Headwound” “Music For Morgues And New Buildings” “Infect With Possibilities” At that time It was all a bit over my head to conceive of what I heard as a full time musical entity, but I was completely intrigued by my first dose of true underground industrial noise. I ended up looking up tons of music at that time but I did not discover the local noise scene, I wish I had. Coming back into noise a few years later, Richard Ramirez remains one of my favorite noise artists today. His effort and widespread contribution to noise is so extensive that its exhausting just keeping yourself informed with every tape, cd and vinyl of his that comes out. I could not order everything, but I trust it’s all worth wile. I particularly enjoy Black Leather Jesus for their use of Metal, An Innocent Young Throat Cutter, and Werewolf Jerusalem.

FTR: Who or what influences you and your sound?

Aspects of daily life I find particularly thought provoking and or stressful or depressing. Industrial accidents, war, nuclear weapons, biological warfare, murder, The Killing Of America (documentary), factories, grime, broken pieces of metal and glass, junkyards, power tools, public sheep hoards, cars, trucks and trains, slaughterhouses, politicians, money, Slasher and Giallo films and fantasies about things I don’t feel comfortable attaching my name to on the internet. Maybe in the magazine Keith. Blood, and used condoms when I see them on the sidewalk. Dead animals. Gore websites. Color atlas of forensic pathology. The crime scene cleaners on Myrtle Street in Oakland, Ca. [with whom I had the sheer pleasure of a Job interview] Thoughts about my Mother, and her crippling betrayal, I truly despise her. I will be at work and look out the window at the industrial atmosphere of the port of Oakland, a constant reminder of the global economy and the constant pain and misery in the world, and just go off on my own thoughts. At this moment Im in the mindset to perform right then and there. I have to wait it out until I get home or my next show to let it all out. Going to shows regularly and checking out what other people are or aren’t doing is definitely an influence weather I want it to be or not. Women and true crime topics are at the forefront my thoughts toward Striations. 80′s Old School Industrial and Power Electronics. Early Black Metal.

FTR: What type of format do you prefer regarding an album release? Cassette/CD/Download/Vinyl?

I have not had the experience of a multitude of releases, but what I have released has been 2 tapes and 1 cdr and I honestly liked the tapes more. Im not a fan of downloading, but I still support it because Its frustrating sometimes when you are exploring an artists full body of work and then you come across things that you will never hear.

FTR: What is your opinion in particular of Japanese “Nipponoise/Japanoise” looking at their main artists like Merzbow, Masonna?

Striations did its second live radio performance on KUSF’s Defeat Sleep program hosted by Dj Cactus, and I brought with me the Japanoise of Death double cd set in the metal box, to play on the show. I am planning to release a CD of K2 on Nefarious Activities. I think Japan is one of the best places for noise music. Each individual artist brings there own style to the harsh noise sounds they have there. I love the ferocity and speed of Masonna’s sound and live videos. Frequency LSD was probably the first real piece of noise I ever purchased. I want to see him live. Merzbow’s super loud recordings and Music For Bondage Performance is some of my all time favorite noise music. I identify with Masami when he writes “I want to make silence by my noise.” This scene becomes more relevant to me with each new piece of noise I hear.

FTR: I would like to ask you if you are interested in which kind of people listen to your sound, I mean, how do you imagine him/her to be?

I try to be honest with everything I do with my music and I have noticed people who hold honesty as an important value eventually gravitate towards my project, if they are looking for more noise.

FTR: Women seem to be a main focus of noise humiliation – in the form of album covers, themes, and track titles, are you interested in deviated or perverted sexual behaviors? If so, what attracts you so much in sexual violence, sexist language?

Yes they are and I have no qualms about it, Again Richard Ramirez often included artwork of naked men and occasional homosexual anal intercourse and I support this imagery very much because It takes the heat off women, and puts it onto a subject not the “main focus of noise humiliation” but equally important. What attracts me to this kind of sexually motivated content is the heavy nature of the story behind each image. With this kind of imagery, its not just paint splatter, it’s a creepy or horrifying image serving as a snapshot to an entire narrative to be explored. I actually take the time to explore some of those narratives and I found some pretty fucked and inspirational stuff. Its not about “rape is cool, yeah,!” That may be what they say essentially on Whitehouse records, but still that’s not what I hear when I listen. This type of noise when done correctly goes deeper into the socio-political aspects of human sexuality, and I am at a point in my life where I feel an imperative to contribute to that discourse.

I am very interested in the legal problem of serial murder. But I don’t distinguish between serial killers and political leaders who order secret slaughters and get away with it like its nothing. People try to downplay these themes in noise but I feel that’s good because it makes my noise stand apart from theirs. I still think these things are very relevant. I like having fun and partying, but the fact is our warstate is alive and well and I feel that we have a serious ideological debate to have when Vince Bugliosi writes one book in 1974 and one in 2008 and they both advocate the death penalty. One was for Manson, the other is for the former President of the United States. Heres why I think this serial killer stuff is still relevant look around at the world and even if you have enough money in your pocket to live comfortably, still, consider that the majority of the people in the world are not as privileged as we are. Some of them are being blown up be our drone aircraft. If you think its not relevant to at least ponder the actions of these killers in the context of things like The Kill Teams and The Rape and Burning of young girls, acts committed by our armed forces over seas, than that’s fine with me, but I think its relevant, so that’s where I differ from some of the other noise artists. But ask yourself, why would Bugliosi argue for prosecuting the president of the United States for murder? I mean, other than to make money.

FTR: If you could do a gig anywhere in the world where would it be?

Cleveland, Ohio
Japan, Namba Bears.

FTR: I’m really impressed with the sound projects coming out of the English, German and Italian scene, etc, etc. Is there any country in particular that inspire you more than others?

Honestly, no. I really don’t have the time to even conceptualize noise on a country to country basis; I basically take every artist individually. If I had to say a quick answer Britain in the 80’s, Sweden in the 90’s, America now.

FTR: I can’t help but notice there are a lot of artists in this scene (with no real x-factor or original approach) who seem to gain a reputation for being a “great band” only on the basis that we’re aware of their project name.

Sometimes an outsider looking in can make that judgment, but then when you get to know those people you learn they do indeed have a history. It would be the preferred order of raw talent and dedication, then releases. But the current trend has been sit by yourself and network and offer no support to anything greater than yourself, in the form of orders, trades, emails, and show attendance. I am weary of these things and I don’t even have the means to release that much material if I wanted to. I can never rush anything I do with Striations because that totally defeats the purpose of being a solo artist where you control and polish everything as close to perfection as you can get. I can tell when a rushed release will sometimes sound imperfect.

FTR: Do you listen to different types of music? A secret Elvis collection perhaps?!

No, all of my personal friends get on my case about not listening to more “normal” music and it annoys the shit out of me. All I want to hear is sonic aggression and dismal experimental music. I also enjoy old school death metal and grindcore, and black metal. I like Elvis not at all for his music or his image but because he made girls scream.

FTR: What first, chicken or the egg?!

The egg, next..

FTR: Anything else you would like to add here….

Thank you +Final Trauma+
